The video showcases theater audiences in Brazil, Singapore, and Mexico as they get ready to watch the original Top Gun. When the theater lights dim, actor Tom Cruise appears on-screen, not in his Lt Pete “Maverick” Mitchell role though. He informs the audience members that “unfortunately [they] will not be seeing the original Top Gun today.” Instead, they have been selected to be “one of the first audiences to see Top Gun: Maverick.”
At Cruise’s announcement, the audiences burst into cheers, confirming that the attendees were not aware of the surprise planned for them. The reactions following the movie were quite endearing, with fans expressing their excitement over being chosen to watch Top Gun: Maverick ahead of the rest of the world. The Top Gun: Maverick reviews were all positive, and one fan arrived for the special screening dressed up as Cruise’s Maverick, wearing his iconic helmet and jumpsuit.
The original Top Gun premiered on May 16, 1986, and went on to become one of Cruise’s highest-grossing films. The project has a large fan following that was excited when news of a sequel broke. After 36 years, Cruise returns to the big screen as a United States naval aviator, and judging by the video, it seems like his return is something fans have been waiting for.
