Like its predecessors, Torchlight 3 is an ARPG still with heavy influence taken from Diablo 2. Four main classes will be available at launch, including the Dusk Mage, Forge, Railmaster, and Sharpshooter. Players will point, click, and loot their way through the game’s campaign, progressing in strength via weapons, armor, and abilities. Perhaps the biggest feature addition in Torchlight 3 is the player’s personalized, customizable Fort, though Fazeer’s Dun’djinn endgame is exciting as well.

As for why Torchlight 3 may not be on many gamers’ radars, that’s at least in part due to the game’s troubled development. Torchlight 3 started as Torchlight Frontiers, a live-service massively multiplayer ARPG. Initial impressions and feedback led developer Echtra Games to reconsider and Torchlight Frontiers became Torchlight 3. It’s those initial negative impressions of Torchlight Frontiers, as well as confusion regarding the change to Torchlight 3, that has caused the game to fly under the radar a bit.
Regardless, Torchlight 3 is looking to deliver an authentic ARPG experience akin to that offered by the two previous two Torchlight games. It may not be the same studio entirely, as Runic closed in 2017, but it still has some of the original games’ creators behind it.
Torchlight 3 releases October 13 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch release to follow.
